Waiting

"Waiting"
“Waiting”

I realized early in life that I’d much rather be doing than waiting.  There’s a lot of waiting that goes one in hospitals.  Just think of all those rooms dedicated to waiting.  Yesterday after blogging, I realized just how healing it was for me.  Just as I realized the other day, waiting for Jon’s test results, that drawing was healing for me.  Not able to concentrate even on a short story, drawing  occupies my hands, sense of touch and brain as a release.  When there are no words for me, there are always pictures.

  1. Yes, knitting does that for me when I am waiting.
    Beautiful drawing Maria.
Continued best wishes and love to you both.

  2. I feel I know you both from following Jon’s blog. Thoughts and prayers are with you both. Have had my share of experiences with hospitals, and find the waiting the most trying part. Glad you have your art to comfort you.

  3. Yes, yes – drawing has always saved me, too. Not sure which city you are in, but when Jon is over the hump and on the mend, I suggest a visit to an art supply store for more pens and notebooks. By the way, is there anything I can do for you?

  4. I always enjoy your drawings, but I find your writing, your words, to always be so concise and heartfelt, so eloquent. Thank you for keeping us updated. Best to Jon and you.

  5. Maria,
I am not a patient person and have never been good at waiting.
I commend you for the way you are dealing with the wait. All the best to you and Jon.

  6. I don’t know how (or maybe because of my profession …) but I can “understand” the picture. Can’t explain it at all but it is really a “speaking” drawing. Thank you.

  7. Maria, being a creative person is a wonderful support to anyone at times like this. Express your feelings through your drawings. It will keep your mind and your hands busy. Being a ‘doer’ myself, just sitting and waiting and doing nothing goes against my grain, too. I don’t like flying, don’t like heights so when I do fly, I take a scribbler with me to write the book I’ve always wanted to write…it’s just the process, not the end product that matters for nothing ever gets beyond that. I don’t think we ever understand what it’s really like about anything this hard in life until we experience ourselves. Take your strength from those here on your forum who have been there before you. That’s what life, to me, is all about. Lending a helping hand to those who walk the path behind you experiencing something that you’ve experienced yourself.

And a drawing on waiting…what would that look like I wonder?

  8. Maria and Jon
I have been reading your blogs for a couple of months now and trying to read back to “catch up”.
I love your farm and the beautiful art you both produce.
Your love for each other shines through it all also your love and care of your animals.

I just wanted to know that while you are waiting, there are others out here waiting with you, keeping you in their hearts and thoughts

    stay strong

  9. Maria, to help you pass the time away, what if we each wrote down what we see in this drawing and what it means to us, then you can tell us what you were meaning it to be to you.

I see your strong relationship with trees for they appear in many of your drawings. This, I don’t know why? I relate to decorative birds in my work, I can’t explain why. In this tree I see roots hanging down at the bottom of the tree and to me, they represent the roots you and Jon have put down on your new Bedlam Farm. Further up, I see a heart that is bleeding with pain and at the tip of the branch, I see what looks like water dripping into a dish. Now, the tree could be weeping for Jon’s medical condition, or it could be the IV he is attached to and the vessel below, representing Jon. And the clock: waiting. Time ticking away and still the waiting.
It’s always interesting to me to hear what other people ‘see’ and feel with my work. That’s what’s fun about art.

  10. Sorry you both are doing this. Yes, always nice to have something to do while waiting – drawing, knitting, ect.

  11. Dear Maria, I love the creativity of a visual thinker!! What an amazing way to deal with stress and waiting. And I love the picture. I am adding my prayers for you and Jon to all the others who have written that they are praying for you!!!! Annie

  12. A week from now all will be well. Treatment done and just the adjustments to post op recovery. Not easy but long term great giving life as was led before.

  13. HI Maria, thanks for taking the time to keep us updated, you and Jon have been in my thoughts a lot over the last few days.

I understand about ‘doing’ not waiting, I find my knitting therapeutic in the same way you describe your sketching bringing comfort. I couldn’t remember if you knit? Plenty of ‘teach yourself’ videos on Youtube, if you want another way to pass the waiting time ….

Best wishes to both of you
