What Comes In

leaves 2

Suddenly there’s yellow and orange
swimming in the blue water
industrial tiles of my kitchen floor

Leaves ride in on my boots
dark and wet
then hop off in my kitchen
(“no matter where I serve my guests….”)
drying brightly

I leave the leaves on the kitchen floor
This time of year
lots of things want to come inside the house
cats and cactus, farm boots and  firewood
the wind and cold.

I think of the leaves,
gathered at the edge of the animals water bucket
when I refill it,
Eyeing my boots.

  1. I love this poem, especially the wittiness. I was really caught by the leaves at the water bucket eyeing your boots.
