The Pileated Woodpecker In Our Maple Tree

The Pileated Woodpecker is back.

I’m not sure if this one is a female or male, but every years since we’ve been here at least one of them, and sometimes two spend time making holes in the Maple tree.

There are some dead branches on the tree that we’re planning on having pruned.  During the last storm a big dead branch fell from the tree onto the front lawn.

But the tree is still very much alive.

I’m torn about the Pileated Woodpeckers.  I love to watch them, hear their “laugh” and the sound of them hammering away on a tree.  But I also don’t want them destroying my beautiful Maple.

  1. Wonderful video! They are such amazing birds – and their call sounds like something totally prehistoric. How neat that you can watch them each year. I doubt that they’ll destroy the trees… they focus on bugs in the dead wood, or nab the ones in the live bark that would do damage. I think of them as “grooming” the tree when I watch. Hope that’s true. Seems like the big nesting holes are in dead trees. Thanks for sharing – this would have been a “rare” sighting a few decades ago. Happy spring!

    1. I do get the sense that they’re eating at the dead branches of the Tree Marcy. But I’ve also seen them destroy trees. It may be that those trees were dying anyway.
