Chatelaine Quilt

chatelaineI had a feeling the name of my latest quilt was somewhere in the writing on the fabric I used in the quilt.  I used a piece of fabric that had instructions on it on how to make a stuffed sewing machine and pincushion.  Thinking it might be in the phrasing of the instructions, I read through it.  That’s when I saw the word Chatelaine.  I had no idea what it meant so figured I might be onto something.

I learned from Wikipedia that a Chatelaine is a  belt hook with a bunch of chains hanging from it.  Each chain has a tool of some sort on it.  A scissor, a thimble a key etc.  Nice, I liked the visual, but as I read further I liked  the word Chatelaine even more. “… it referred to a device designed to have all the tools necessary for the woman of the household to sort out any problem she may encounter in her day…”  Although the definition states the term was used disparagingly, I don’t see it myself.  It sounds magical to me.   Like Felix The Cat’s magic bag.

So suddenly my latest quilt becomes a problem solver.  Or maybe more like a hug.  Something safe and grounding and comforting when you need it to be.  So Chatelaine Quilt it is:Chatelaine Quilt sig
