The Necessary Dragon

I’ve come to think of my Flower Breathing Dragon as the Necessary Dragon.   I’m thinking of the darkness inside of me not as bad, but as the protector.  A part of me that will do what is necessary to keep me safe.  It rears it’s head in different ways, but isn’t afraid to do what ever it has to and knows when it’s best to breathe flower and and when it’s right to breathe fire.

  1. Of course, I am reading your post and Mary Oliver comes to mind…this poem in particular, because there is a certain fierceness to you creative underpinnings, “Wild Geese”:

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
    love what it loves.
Tell me about your despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
    Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
    are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
    the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
    are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting —
over and over announcing your place
    in the family of things.

    1. One of my favorite Mary Oliver poems Tara. Thanks for posting it, I haven’t read it in a long time. And I wouldn’t have seen the connection till you pointed it out.
