A Video of Me Free Motion Sewing My New “Back Porch Potholder”

A few days ago I came  home and Flo was sitting in the box on the back porch.  But she was sitting in such a way that it caught my attention.  She was sitting up, in a classic cat pose, and the shape of her seemed framed by the edge of the box.  The negative space around her was as interesting as the shape she made in the confines of the box.

I immediately wanted to draw her.  But I didn’t even have time to take a picture before she moved, so I had to work from memory.  The Red Hen wasn’t actually on top the box at the time, but she’s been there before with either Minnie or Flo sitting in the lower bunk.

The two of them made a good enough picture, but when I added the “Books” sign, I knew it was the design I was looking for.

First I made a drawing in pencil….

….then I made some practice drawings with my sewing machine until I got it the way I wanted. Then I   started making the potholders, using different colored thread.

Here’s a video of me  free motion  sewing the first and last parts of the potholder, Flo then the word “Books”.

My “Book’s” Potholder are for sale.  Since I draw each one individually with my sewing machine, they are all slightly different.  I still have to finish sewing them together, but I’ll be making and selling 10 of them.  They are $25 each + $5 shipping.  If you’d like one for your kitchen, just email me here at [email protected].  I take checks and Paypal.

  1. For a girl who could never even sew a wrap around skirt, this is mesmerizing and such a beautiful art form.
It also takes me back to when I was a little girl and loved to hear the hum of the sewing machine as my mom sewed.

    Enjoyed watching this very much.

    1. The sound of my sewing machine was so loud in the video. I was thinking how so often people say they don’t like the way they sound when recorded. Like it doesn’t sound like they thing they do. I was thinking the same of my sewing machine. It’s sounds so different in real life, I don’t think I would have recognized the sound if it from the video.
