The Santuario De Chimayo is a famous Roman Catholic church that is known to have healing powers. The land it is built on was origianally known as a healing place by the Tewa Native American’s.
I was captivated by the fence leading to the church, which has hundreds of crosses and rosaries and other personal items on it. We were lucky to be able to sit in the sanctuary of the old Adobe Church, with only one other person, before the busloads of people came.
Over all I got a creepy feeling from the church and the buildings surrounding it. It had the feeling of a well run tourist attraction and was overrun with images of Christ suffering and in pain. I grew up with that kind of imagery and belief system and rejected it long ago.
I’d like to see some of the other Adobe churches in the area and the beautifully painted altars. I do love the painting and architecture.
