The Santuario De Chimayo is a famous Roman Catholic church that is known to have healing powers. The land it is built on was origianally known as a healing place by the Tewa Native American’s.
I was captivated by the fence leading to the church, which has hundreds of crosses and rosaries and other personal items on it. We were lucky to be able to sit in the sanctuary of the old Adobe Church, with only one other person, before the busloads of people came.
Over all I got a creepy feeling from the church and the buildings surrounding it. It had the feeling of a well run tourist attraction and was overrun with images of Christ suffering and in pain. I grew up with that kind of imagery and belief system and rejected it long ago.
I’d like to see some of the other Adobe churches in the area and the beautifully painted altars. I do love the painting and architecture.
This reminds me of a chapel in Seelisberg, Switzerland, high up in the mountains overlooking lake Luzern. It was a healing place and people put their crutches up on the walls as well as paintings showing their healing process. It was an amazing place and there was not an empty place on the wall without crutches or paintings.
It’s sounds very similar Joanne.
I had the same creeped-out feeling about the place. I have been to several great shrines in Europe and felt great peace, not a lot of crazy, frantic energy like i did here.
I think the sacred part of it is buried beneath the frantic energy Cathryn.
