Books, Donkeys, Candlelight

Jon read the story about boars from Helen Macdonald’s new book  Vesper Flights.   l loved her book H is for Hawk and her new one is stories about the “curiosities and wonders of nature”.

Jon’s so good at buying me books.

I never take for granted that I’m married to someone who supplies me with books I love to read.  Since we met, I have half-jokingly told Jon I conjured him up (a part of me believes I did, how else to explain it).  And truly, if I were to conjure up a partner, finding me books I love to read would be one of the things he’d be doing.

When Jon read the part about how wild boars are altering the wood with their wallowing holes which fill with water “and become ponds for dragonfly larvae” I took it as a sign from the universe that this book was perfect for me right now.   Before a few days ago I never even knew there was such a thing as dragonfly larvae and now they’re popping up all over the place.

I made Jon pause in his reading so I could take this photo of him at the dining room table with the painting of him and his donkey Carol, by Christoper Smith behind him.  It’s the perfect portrait of him really, books, donkeys, and the romance of candlelight.
