A few weeks ago Kathleen sent me two small bags of colorful wooden buttons.
Jon and I emptied the bags onto the dining room table and played with the buttons arranging them until Jon made a tree.
Jon’s tree inspired me to use the buttons in a fiber painting of a tree.
Then one night as I was falling asleep, some words came to me that felt like they were a part of the tree. They were: Cloud is a whisper high above tree that tells a story of who we can be.
I loved the way the buttons looked on the dining room table and knew I had a piece of fabric, that I got in India, the same color.
I wanted the clouds to be soft and whispy so I tore the white and blue fabric into strips and basted them onto the backing then stitched them down with my free-motion sewing machine.
Then I found the piece of fabric to use for the tree. I always find it interesting how when I find the “right” piece of fabric, there is no doubt in my mind about it. I chose a long thin piece of velour with a flower print on it.
I pinned the tree up to get a feel for what it would look like. But it’s much too big. I have this habit of filling in a space when I’m working. The buttons get lost on this tree. But I do like the way it looks and feels, I just need less of it.
Wow. Love this already.
Thank you Janet.
I love this tree and can’t wait to follow it.
Love the colours and your artistic imagination.
This looks amazing! I love trees and those buttons are an amazing element to evoke their shapes and forms. I can’t wait to see the finished piece. You are a talent.
The buttons inspired me Toni. Thanks.
