Bee Pillow

Bee Pillow

While I was cleaning up my studio I came across this piece of bee fabric that Fran sent me a while back.  I thought it would work well in a pillow and when I started searching for something that would work with it, I found some silky fabric samples with embroidered vines and flowers on them.

Not only were they perfect for the Bee Pillow, but using a silky fabric would be a good test for my new sewing machine. I mixed it up a little too with some linen and heavy upholstery fabric.

I was wondering if I’d have to play with the tension sewing this thin slippery fabric but was delighted when my Janome worked as well with all the different combinations of fabric as if I were sewing with cotton.

I used a little zigzag stitch on the edge of the solid brown fabric which unravels around the edges and it made a nice binding.

I didn’t get to finish the pillow.  I’ll do that tomorrow in between calling into Jon’s radio show Katz On Dogs, around 2 pm and Bellydancing.

  1. I’ll bet this has been called for already but if not – I would just love to purchase it. It’s perfect!

  2. Hey Maria, that is beautiful. I can’t wait to see all that you are able to create with your new sewing machine and arm. Yesterday I put a box of leftover bits and swatches in the mail–including I think a small rectangle of left over brown silk from some set or costume project and maybe some sheer pale blue silk that we used to create the illusion of a waterfall. Hoping you find some goodies to play with. The mail has been slow. We shall see how long it takes to fly from O’ahu, across the Pacific, and all the way across the continental U.S. to your farm. Aloha nui. Have fun.

    1. Oh Thank you Donna. I love that the fabric was in a play! it will have good mojo. Looking forward to the scraps and swatches. They’re always inspiring. I’ll let you know when they get here. And I wanted to let you know I send one of your flower cards to Mary Kellogg. I know she’ll just love it, so thank you.

  3. Glad you found some use for the silky fabric, I also loved it but my eyes are getting week ,need cataract surgery soon. You made a lovely pillow out of the material.

    1. Ah Uta, I didn’t remember that you gave it to me. Thank you! I’ve used some of it before, but there is so much of it, I can do more and more with it. Good luck with your Cataract Surgery!
