The Chicks Meet The Hens and Minnie Too

We’ve had the chicks,Kitty and Anne, for a little over three weeks.

Yesterday I moved them into a big crate in the barn with a heat lamp.   But before putting them in the barn I moved their little crate outside for the day.  I took out the tray in the bottom of the crate so the chicks could have their feet on the ground and peck around in the grass for the first time in their lives.

I watched as Anne, picked up an ant in her beak then quickly dropped it.  Kitty ate an apple blossom petal that drifted into the crate and they both pecked at a dandelion.  By the end of the day, Kitty and Anne were eating clover and had gotten used to eating insects.  Anne even kept her eye on a tiny gnat that flew into the crate.

This morning they’re back outside again.

  1. It’s fascinating to watch the chicks grow so fast. I sent this video on to my daughter and she loved it! She has cats and a dog, all outdoor pets, so this keeps her busy. There are only a handful of very cold winter days in North Carolina when she lets them into the garage to keep a little warmer.

    1. I think so too Fran. I’m so glad I paid more attention to them this time. Now you can see the space above their beak with their red comb will grow. Sounds like your daughter would love to have some chicks and would take good care of them.
