Mushrooms In The Woods

I took my iPhone but had no plans to take any pictures on my walk in the woods yesterday. But with all the rain, the mushrooms were sprouting and I couldn’t resist.  I don’t know their names, but here are some of them….

This one was about six inches round…

These tiny mushrooms were sprouting from a log…

  1. They sure are pretty. Love that yellow. Several years ago, I enjoyed watching a slug chew a trail across the cap of a little lawn ‘shroom in my neighbor’s front verge while I watered the dog. It looked like the slug was giving the round top a little scalloped trim and was chowing down at such a good clip that I remember thinking that they don’t travel as fast as he was eating! I think I read somewhere that about a quarter of the under-earth is made of fungi. That’s a lot! And what you found on your walk in a small bit of woods seems pretty diverse.
    Thank you for the tour!

    1. What an amazing thing to witness Amy. I’ve never seen a slug eating. When I see mushrooms now I think of something I read in the book “Lab Girl” by Hope Jahren. She compared the fungi under the ground to a man lying down and the mushroom his penis. It’s an image that stuck, and gets the point across, that there is so much more going onunder the ground and the mushroom is only a small part of it.
