Bringing Mother Mary To Sue Silverstein

I sang along to Paul McCartney singing  Let It Be  as I stitched my “MW” on the bottom of my Mother Mary.  I’ll miss having her on the wall in my studio, but I’m also very happy that today we’ll bring her to Sue Silverstein at Bishop Maginn.  Thanks again to Kathye for buying my fabric painting for Sue and making this possible.

On the back of the piece, I wrote a note to Sue thanking her for introducing me to the Blessed Mother. It was in her  Art classroom at Bishop Maginn that I came to know Mother Mary as someone who can hold paintbrushes in her hands as well as prayers.

Let it Be    by Paul McCartney
When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be
Let it be, let it be
A-let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be
And when the broken-hearted people
Living in the world agree
There will be an answer
Let it be
For though they may be parted
There is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer
Let it be
Let it be, let it be
A-let it be, let it be
Yeah, there will be an answer
Let it be
Let it be, let it be
A-let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be
Let it be, let it be
A-let it be, yeah, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be
And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine until tomorrow
Let it be
I wake up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be-e
Yeah, let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah, let it be
Oh, there will be an answer
Let it be-e
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah, let it be
Oh, there will be an answer
Let it be
Let it be, let it be
A-let it be, yeah, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be

  1. Dear Maria…since the evening of our very first communication about Mother Mary and Sue, I woke up in the middle of the night with the melody of “Let It Be” filling my sleepy brain. So much so I looked up the lyrics the next morning and just loved the references to Mother Mary, especially “…and when the night is cloudy there is still a light that shines on me…”. It has played on an endless loop in my head and heart since then. And when I saw that you wrote about it today I HAD to reach out to you again. And on the day that your Blessed Mother Mary goes home to Sue. ✨

    1. Wow Kathye, that’s pretty wild. I listened to that song more than once when I made the piece. Somehow I’m not surprised as I might be.

  2. I too always believed Paul McCartney was referring to the Blessed Mother Mary in the song Let It Be until a friend of mine played an interview with him. When asked if the reference was biblical McCartney stated that it was a reference to his own mother who’s name was Mary. She died when Paul was 14 yrs old and he said she appeared to him in a dream when he was feeling very anxious and whispered to him Let it be. I found this fascinating. I still think of the Blessed Mother when I listen Let It Be. Who knows maybe the Blessed Mother encouraged his mothers spirit to go to him and comfort him in his time of need.

    1. I read Paul McCartney’s story of his mother too, Josie. But, like you, it didn’t matter to me. For me it’s about getting comfort from this being whoever she may be or whatever form she comes in. I love that McCartney wrote this about his own mother and yet she can become everyone’s mother.
