The Hens In The Apple Tree

More than ever, the hens are hanging out in the apple tree.  They dug a hole on the side of the tree deep enough for them to be completely hidden if they keep their head down.  But they also spend a lot of time inside the big hole in the tree.

When they come out, their feathers are brown with dusty soil.

I was relieved that the trunk of the tree wasn’t damaged when the branch broke off. Since then  I’ve been thinking of paying homage to it with a potholder. So I looked through my photos and found the one below of Kitty/Anne resting inside the hole in the tree.

I did this quick drawing last week with the sprout coming from the broken branch.  This week I hope to translate it into a potholder with my sewing machine.
