Jon Paints

Jon’s painting of the farm

I just came in from taking care of the animals.  The fire in the woodstove is all orange and red flames and I take off my hat. It feels warm in the house after having gotten used to the cold outside.

I’m sitting at the dining room table, posting my Monday Morning Video to Youtube and when I look up, I see the painting Jon did yesterday.

All primary colors with confident pencil lines giving the bold shapes form. I smile at the unself-conscious joy I see in the painting.

This weekend when Jon said he wanted to try watercolors I got out the portable watercolor set he bought for me years ago.  He tacked a piece of watercolor paper from a pad I had on his music stand and began.

I was no help, I have no idea how to use watercolors.  I’ve never been good at painting.

So never having taken an art class in his life, Jon was on his own.

And that’s what I love about Jon’s painting.

It isn’t trying to be anything other than what it is. He’s not trying to paint in a certain style or after a certain artist. He’s just doing what he would do, and there is a freshness and ease that comes with such an attitude.

I couldn’t stop looking at it. I hope he does more, I could learn something from him.
