An Owl On The Farm

The bones and fur of an owl pellet

It was just on the other side of the fence in the pasture next to my studio.  A long thick owl pellet.  The stuff an owl regurgitates after eating.  Pieces of  broken bones and fur.

It was big, the size of a rat I thought as I poked though it looking at the tiny pieces of bone.

I found the pellet on Friday and on Saturday saw the owl.  It was in the morning and although I didn’t have my glasses on so couldn’t see clearly, I could see the large bird in maple next to my studio.

Could be a hawk I thought, but the chest was wide and the overall shape more compact.

Then it flew in that soundless gliding way an owl does.  It landed in the stand of trees across the road.  After that I lost sight of it.

I’m not sure what kind of owl it is, but it had a white belly and was white under its wings, so it could be a Barn Owl.  That would make sense with all the pigeons and the invasion of rats we’ve had at the farm.

It may be here to stay for a while, or perhaps it’s just here to hunt.  It seems to like the maple outside my studio though.  I’ll have to keep an eye out for it.

  1. We sure don’t need any owls or other predatory birds hanging around Bedlam Farm and endangering ZIP!!!!!!!!!!

    1. We have lots of hawks and owls around the farm. So farm they have never bothered the hens or any of our cats. I think there is plenty of small animals around for them to focus on, mice, rats, voles, moles and rabbits.

  2. I miss my barn owls on the farm. The first owl that visited me flew right over to my back fence within just a few feet of me. I felt her presence asking me to put up a nesting box, so I did. The babies were adorable. They looked like muppets. I never get over how magical they are.

    1. Wow Janet, that sounds just amazing! I heard the owl tonight when I was in my studio but not close by. The owl at our farm may just be a visitor.

  3. I’ve only seen a owl once….in Florida
Eagles I just started to see, also when I lived in FL.

Moving back to No FL in March for warmth , health and hopefully owls.
