Night Grazing

Issachar and Merricat

Night grazing.

Just a few days ago I wrote that I wouldn’t leave the gates open at night this early in the spring.  But yesterday was so hot and buggy, I let the animals graze all night.

This morning they were content when I closed the gate.  Issachar and Merricat found a narrow strip of shade on the south side of the barn.  The rest of the sheep were already in the barn.

The heat doesn’t bother the donkeys.  Their coats are still thick, but I brush them everyday, their hair settling beneath them or caught up like seeds with the wind.

In the fall I’ll find an empty nest in the magnolia tree strung together with donkey hair.
