A Good Way To Start The Day

I didn’t hear them come up behind me. I was squatting under the crab apple tree, taking a video of the leaf dangling from a spiders silk, dancing with the wind. I was there for five or ten minutes, till I got the video I wanted.

I heard the snort, you can hear it at the very end of the video, but I thought it was Zinnia.  The thing is, the donkeys didn’t interrupt me.  They waited patiently until I was done.  When I looked behind me I was so surprised to see Fanny’s head so close to mine.

I had no idea she was there. I can’t get over how such big animals can make so little noise.

The other unusual thing was that always Lulu who takes the lead, bumping up against me for attention.  But this time it was Fanny with Lulu waiting her turn.

I scratched Fanny under her neck and chin, the places she has a hard time reaching.  And I got the feeling she was telling me that things were okay between us.

It’s been tough these past weeks with Fanny’s hoof hurting her so much and me trying to take care of it.  It hasn’t been easy on her and I’m sure I’ve been annoying.  Tying her to the post, scraping and soaking her hoof and bandaging it up over and over again.

But now, she’s doing really well with no signs of limping.  I know she’s feeling better.  And I think she was letting me know that.  Saying we were good.

As Fanny wandered off, trying to pick an apple from the tree, Lulu moved up and I scratched her until Issachar nosed his way in, looking for some attention too.

It was a lovely way to start the day.

Lulu, Fanny and Issachar had a hard time reaching the apples so I picked one for each of them.
