The Dancing Pear, Making Quilt “Squares”

What a joy to work with these animated fruits.  I can’t help smiling when I look at them.

I started the day by cutting up a tablecloth.

This time the tablecloth belonged to me.

My mother gave it to me the first time I got married over 30 years ago.  Her uncle, who was in the Merchant Marines, bought it back from one of his trips probably in the 40s.  He was old when I knew him, a small, quiet, kind man who lived alone.

He always reminded me of Jiminy Cricket.

I pulled the linen tablecloth off my shelf yesterday because the bright colors worked so well with the colors in the embroideries.  I cut the colors in strips knowing I’d use them to make very thin lines around each embroidery.

I used the design in the flower sack both intentionally and randomly around each piece.  For the Orange leaning on the juicer, I found a hankie with an unusual embroidered flower that went perfectly with it.

I cut the purple and gold flowers off an embroidery I used on my last quilt, Memory of Belonging.  It turns out they are just right for the Crying Onion and Smiling Eggplant.

This one is a bit odd, with it’s grumpy grapes and pink fruit.  But it makes me smile as much as the others.

Tomorrow I’ll start working on the dancing pots.

  1. Are you making this new quilt for someone specific, Maria? The whimsical dancing fruits and veggies elicit thoughts of Alice in Wonderland, one of my favorite books when I was growing up!

  2. This makes me smile too. This will be such fun to put all the expressive faces together. Can’t wait to see how you do it, Maria.

    1. No Jan, I don’t embroider at all. My quilts would have to be much more expensive if I did. These are all Vintage linens that people have given to me and I love them too!
