Circle Of Ashes

Lulu stood in the middle of the circle of ashes and I combed my fingers through her hair.  Gray dust flew up from the back and covered my hands.

The donkeys can’t get enough of the ashes from last weeks bonfire.  They roll in it, lay in it or just stand in it.

Maybe there are less insects in the ash than in the grass where they usually lay.  I keep trying to figure it out.

But every time I see one of them in the circle, I can’t help but think of it as healing.

  1. Hi Maria,

Somewhere I heard that donkeys like to lay in ashes to protect themselves from pesky flies or scratch an itch that they can’t quite reach. I think that’s similar to their dust baths. Probably elements in the burnt wood offer more protection than dirt.
