Listening To Merricat

I don’t know why, but for the first time today, Merricat let me scratch her neck.

I was crouched in the pole barn taking a picture of Kim when Merricat walked over to me and put her face in mine.  I reached up and scratched her on the side of her neck.  And she let me.

As I scratched her, I pictured the times I tried to scratch her on the back, as I do with Asher and Issachar, and how she would quickly move away from me.

And in that moment,  I understood that she doesn’t like being scratched on her back.  Maybe because she can’t see me when I’m directly behind her or maybe she just doesn’t like it. It was as if she was also saying I could scratch her on the neck anytime.

As if she’s actually been trying to tell me just  that every time she puts her face in mine.   Which happens often enough to make me know it’s something she does.

I’ll try again tomorrow and see if it was a one time thing, or something more.  Maybe I’m finally learning to listen to Merricat.

  1. What a beautiful face she has. It’s as though I can feel its softness. And those gorgeous eyelashes like curtains over her eye!
I never thought of a sheeps face in that way before.
