My “Not Going Back” Potholders are both personal and political.
There are things in my life I have left behind forever. And I have hope in our politics, that we will be moving on to a kinder and more tolerant country.
Potholders have been an important form of creative expression for me for almost fifteen years. They are a kind of functional art where I get put my thoughts and ideas and connect with other people in a very basic way.
This is the art of the everyday, a way to bring beauty and affirmations into the day to day.
The fabric at the center of five of my Not Going Back Potholders, the one with the girls sweeping, is Vintage 1940s flour sack. On the surrounding fabric I have stitched each potholder individually with the mantra “Not Going Back”.
I also have two Potholders made from vintage hand-embroidered linens.
One is the “Old Lady who lived in a shoe and had so many children she didn’t know what to do. ” I have a feeling she and her children would be happy not going back.
The other is a Dutch girl who looks to me as if she’s marching forward and telling everyone behind her that she not going back.
