Apples And Hay

Kim and Issachar

The grass is turning yellow, but the apples are still falling.

When I go to the barn yard for afternoon feeding with a leaf of hay, the sheep and donkeys come running.  But then, when I open the gate to the pasture where the apple tree hangs over the fence, they run again.

They don’t fight over the apple scattered on the ground.  I don’t know if there is a pecking order that I’m not privy to.  But I watched Asher walk away from an apple on the ground that Constance was trying to get a bite of.  She eventually did, but it took her longer than it would have Asher who would have gobbled it up whole.

And when Kim and Issachar both went for a couple of apples, Issachar waited till Kim got hers before taking the other one.

The twins can get pushy when there are no apple on the ground and I’m picking them from the tree. But I think they behave differently when I’m not doling out food.

Soon all the apples will be gone.

Maybe by then, Ted Emerson will have come to do the bush hogging and then I can let the sheep and donkeys graze the back pasture.  Right now, with all the tall vegetation,  there’s too many seeds to get stuck in their wool.

And there’s plenty of hay, even if they’d prefer to graze.
