Sitting Under The Apple Tree, Watching A Moth

There have been so many moths in the house this year. Every night I gently wrap my hand around one or more that are high up on the living room or kitchen wall and bring them back outside.

A yellow leaf floats on its back, gently rocking lower and lower till it touches the ground.

The sky is an autumn blue puzzle through the bare sprigs of the apple tree.

When the sun illuminates the rapidly moving wings of a moth, it turns it into a glowing ball of light.

The moth lands on the tip of one of the thin twigs and begins walking.  Down the sprig to its tip, around next years bud, then back up.  When the moth reach a “v” in the thin branches she reaches her front feet across the narrowest part of the space and grabs onto the other side of the “v”.  She pulls her whole body across the divide, her back feet landing last.

After the slightest pause she begins walking again.

The moth does this again and again, for so long I look away and when I look back she’s still at it.

I wonder if she’s looking for a place to make a cocoon.  Or maybe this is what moths do when they’re not bathing in the artificial light from our lamp on the living room wall.

  1. Wow, Maria- you are quite the insect photographer. The moth photo is so interesting! It looks like so much like fur; just beautiful.

    1. There have been so many moths this year Barb, and they are all so beautiful. The furry part of them I’m only recently seeing and mostly through the pictures.

  2. Don’t sit under the apple tree with anyone else but Jon,
