Red Chakra Quilt, Roots and Grounding

I’m at my best when I’m working with scraps.  Those big pieces of fabric make my work more difficult.  I like interacting with fabric that already has a story.  Fabric that has a life before I knew it.  Fabric that can bring something to process.

If I went to a store and bought fabric, I’m not sure that all my quilts wouldn’t look the same.  That I wouldn’t keep choosing fabric I “liked”.

This is what I came up with when I got done sewing all my red scraps together today.  (the color is a bit off, it’s hard to get it accurate with all those reds).

But once I had them all sewn together, they didn’t do what I wanted them too.  The pieces all together like this looked too Victorian to me.

So I took the sections apart and came up with four separate sections.

And when I laid them out on my floor, I could see that what I needed in the center of the quilt was a tree, that all this scraps could dance around. (again the color is off).

The Red chakra is about grounding, it’s out connection to the earth, to the physical world.  It’s our foundation, the basics of  survival.  Our roots.

Tomorrow I’ll stitch the tree with dark red thread on a light red fabric.  Then I’ll see what happens.
