Suzy sent me the photo of the first of five shawls she made this year.  I’ll be selling them all on my blog in the next few weeks.

With the photo of her first shawl Suzy also sent me a picture of the Celosia, or First Flame flowers, growing in her yard.  “I’m going to send you seeds,” she texted me, “its glorious and so easy to collect the seeds.”

Suzy’s Celosia

I couldn’t  help but make the connection between the color of the Celosia and her shawl. And when I found that they are also called “First Flame” I thought it the perfect name for her shawl too.

The closer you get to First Flame, the more you see.  Among the pale and deep orange is variegated wool like a garden of orange, blue, yellow and green.

And that sliver of blue, that I can’t help but think of as sky, has white locks like clouds,  spun into it.

If you’ve never seen any of Suzy’ Fatzinger’s shawls, they are made with the mohair from Suzy’s angora goats, Ruth, Alice, Lucy and April.  She also uses wool from some of her favorite fiber artists.

Suzy hand spins the wool then hand knits each shawl.

Some of the wool is dyed others kept natural.  Suzy washes each shawl in a natural solution that makes them even softer than they are naturally.

Each of Suzy’s shawls is a unique creations.  Not two are exactly alike.  First Flame sparkles with the sun and glows on these gray autumn days.
