I can’t stop looking at the picture that Suzy sent to me of her shawl. “It has presence” I text back to her. “Dignity,” Jon says when I show it to him. “That’s it,” I say,”dignity is the word I was looking for.”
We’re eating breakfast, but I’m thinking of Suzy’s shawl.
Suddenly in my mind, I’m seeing the three tall oaks that form a circle in the woods behind the farm. Between them the leaves begin to swirl upward in a vortex. Like a dust devil, it sucks up soil, rocks and plants in a spinning blur. And as the swirling slows Suzy’s shawl appears, hovering in the circle of trees, as if created from the fiber of the earth.

All those natural colors from white to gray to black, with a vein of golden green. Like the layers of the earth itself.
This is Suzy’s final shawl of the season. In it I see both the earth and the soft wings of a moth.
Suzy hand spins and knits all of her shawls. Her Earth Shawl is made of mohair from her angora goats, Alice, April, Ruth and Lucy as well as wool from some of her favorite fiber artists.
Even though this shawl looks to me like it can stand on its own, I can’t help but wonder what it feels like to be draped it.
It is a unique work of wearable art.
