Lady bugs and wasps, flies in the windows. A mouse running round and round in the tub of the washing machine. Sun warmed leaves, the color of dried peaches, blanket the grass. The dry hot wind piles them thick in the flowerbeds, gutters and along the fences.
The dogs find the shade of my studio, drowsy from the heat.
I change my long sleeves for a tee shirt and pull dragonfly-red thread through the layers of my Red Chakra Quilt.
Last weekend I went for a trail ride with my friend Jackie. I’m still not sure exactly why, but I had the urge to get on a horse. Maybe to see if I’d be any better at it. To test my confidence.
We walked through the woods, the trail covered in bright yellow maple leaves and as the speckled draft horse moved under me, all I could think was that I’d like to walk through these woods. That I prefer to have my feet on the ground.
When I finish tacking my quilt, I’ll lunch on the last of the borscht.
Last time I ate it on from a red bowl, a shade milkier than the cold soup. I sat on a the back porch and watched amazed as an electric red dragonfly landed on the rim of my hat which I’d put on the table.
Even her wings, which never stopped vibrating, shimmer red.
