Making “Happy Home” Potholders

It was during the summer that I was blogging on the front porch and I made the drawing of the Happy Home brick and the little hanging succulent.

There was something about them, the way they hung together filing the long thin space between the  window and the door.

A friend gave Jon and me the Happy Home brick from 1887, which he created a metal bracket for, as a wedding gift.

I’ve been thinking about that little drawing since I made it, wanting to make it into a potholder.  And today it felt right, like it was time.

I tried to draw it on a square potholder, but it just didn’t work.  It needed that long thin space.  So that’s what it will be.  A longer, thinner potholder.  After all, it’s not like every potholder has to be the same size.

I still haven’t tried stitching it.  But I think I’m going to be adding just a touch of green to the heart shaped leaves of the succulent.  I’m not sure if I’ll put the green fabric paint down before or after I do the stitching, but I’ll figure that out as I go.

I probably won’t get to making this potholder before next week because tomorrow I’ll be finishing up my Orange Elephant Potholders and putting them up for sale in my Etsy Shop.

Just last month Jon took a picture of the Happy Home brick and hanging succulent.  He hadn’t seen my drawing, but had the same instinct for it as I did.
