The hens found a place to rest in my garden.
I dug up some of those long purple iris’ that had spread so much they were beginning to take over the garden. The soil is soft and dry under the leaves and the hens found a good place to take a dust bath, then settle down for a while.
They’re welcome in my garden this time of year, but in the spring I put up little wire fences to keep them out so they don’t dig up the sprouting perennials and seeds.
There seem to be more leaves than usual this year.
On the colder days, the hens and Zip make themselves small, curling up in the leaves warmed by the sun. But soon I’ll be raking them up and stuffing them in bags to put around my studio foundation for insulation this winter.
I guess I’ll be using them the same way Zip and the hens do.
