Full Moon Fiber Art

Scrap Art, Something New

I finished sewing the last piece that I made from my bags of scraps.  Then, because my studio floor was full of scraps of fabric, I hung them all on my wall.

My original plan was to make them into a quilt, but the more I looked at them, they didn’t seem to belong together on one quilt.

A few of them held their own as individual pieces.   In others I  saw a pillow or the beginnings of a quilt.

It made me nervous to think of selling them individually.  I’ve only done that once with an abstract wall hanging.   But  the more I looked at them and thought about it, I could see it might work.

A smaller piece of art, somewhere between a potholder and a quilt.

I didn’t want to over think it or talk myself out of something new.  Not just because it’s was something new.   So I started working on the biggest piece, the one with the butterflies.

I cut a piece of batting, then decided to do some free motion  stitching.  I pulled out my Language Of The Goddess book for inspiration. I used some of the butterfly designs but also worked intuitively with the shapes and feeling of the fabrics.

I like the design of the piece so much I didn’t want to compromise it.   So I used the same color thread as the fabric so the stitched designs would be subtle.

I haven’t finished the stitching yet, but when I do I’ll give this piece a backing and will sell it as a wall hanging.   The color is a bit off, it’s more maroon and less purple than this photos.  I’ll have to take it outside to get more accurate colors.

I’m both nervous and excited about this idea.  I’m hoping it can open up a new art form for me.  And I hope it will give some of you who don’t want or can’t afford a quilt, a smaller piece of art that you can hang on your wall.
