The hens haven’t come out of the coop since it snowed on Wednesday. If they can’t see the ground, they are shy about coming out.
Today when I cleaned out the Hen House, scooping out the dirty straw and chicken dropping, the hens got rattled enough to consider leaving. It was also warmer today than it’s been all week and the snow is melting.
Zip hung around as I cleaned the coop and put suet in the bird feeders. He was especially interested in the suet which I got from a neighbor who butchers a cow every year.
We’ve have more snow already this year than we did all last winter. That makes me think we’ll have a snowy winter. I cleared the front and back porch, putting the planters in the barn and stacking the wicker furniture, to make them easier to shovel. I left a wooden box with a pillow in it for Zip to nap in and the tables and chairs out so Jon can take his flower pictures.
Now that it’s dark by 4:30, I took advance of the 40 degree weather and put the winter lights up too.
The shovels are on the back porch and we’re ready for winter.
White Hen was the first to venture out of the chicken coop today. I threw some meal worms on the ground to entice Kitty and Anne. Soon all the hens were out of the coop.
