In May the barn swallows will be back. Now sparrows (I think they are sparrows) roost in the rafters of the pole barn.
I open the gate to the barn yard and hear them chattering, I see their droppings on Lulu’s back.
I walk into the pole barn and it immediately goes silent.
In a flush they swoop out in a shallow upside down arch. Small grayish brown birds, maybe a dozen, so fast they are more movement than anything solid.
They don’t hang around, flying in warning like the barn swallows.
They don’t come back until I’m gone.
