Kathy sent me the birds a few months ago.
They were on the chair in our dining room for some time, it’s where I put boxes or pieces of fabric before I wash them then bring them into my studio. But sometimes it’s take me a while to get to them. Often, when I’m working on a quilt, I check the box in the house to see if any of the fabric is something I need.
Once the birds finally made their way into my studio, it didn’t take me long to see the connection between them and one of the fabric squares I made from scraps in November.
I laid them next to each other while I was work on my quilt Pink and knew right away they’d be something bigger.
I didn’t even clean up the left over fabric from Pink on my work table and floor when I got into my studio this morning. I went right to the birds and that piece made from scraps.
The next little miracle came when I found strips of fabric that I’d sewn together last year around this time for a quilt I was working on (I can’t remember which quilt it was). I did all the work of piecing them together only to realize they didn’t fit in with what I was doing.
But this year, with Kathy’s birds, they are just right. The photo below is where I left it for today. I’m excited to get back to it tomorrow.

Oh Maria,
I’d almost forgot about the birds. The brightly colored fabrics that surround them work magically together.
I am excited to see where this goes, Maria ! The birds will be so beautiful wherever you arrange them.
Thanks Laura.
It strikes me that while all four of the birds to the left of it are turned away, the one on the right is “different”: taking action, spreading its wings, expressing itself, looking alive, dancing almost, arriving/ready to land in place.
That’s interesting Amy, I hadn’t paid so much attention to what they were doing, I was looking at shapes and colors. But I like your take on it. Perhaps just what you saw hit me on a sub conscious level. I’d like to think that….
