Today I went to the pond determined to find life.
I squatted on the edge of water seeing nothing at first as always happens.
After a minute or so I saw a tiny diving beetle lazily paddling through the plants growing in the pond which are beginning to turn green again.
Next a spider walking on water.
It stopped and drifted with the current, I swear I saw it move one leg like a rudder which steered it towards a piece of yellow grass sticking out of the water. Like a boat drifting into a dock, the spider gently collided with the grass and hopped on, that much closer to the shore.
Once I saw the salamander, as lean and quick as a fish, darting into the muddy bottom of the pond, I was satisfied.

I love the image of the spider using one leg as a rudder. Made me smile!!
I wonder if it’s true Barb, if they actually do that….
I just googled it after reading your comment. It’s a real thing!
Oh that’s very cool Barb! Thanks for looking into it. I was thinking, it’s kind of fun to see something like that for the first time without knowing about it. Then finding out it’s true. Makes me feel like I’ve discovered something, even if other people and certainly the spider already know about it. I think part of the joy is not knowing. Although knowing something and then seeing it for yourself can also be really satisfying.
I absolutely understand! Fun discovery for both of us!
