Winters Flowers for the Dark Days, My “Bird” Quilt All Done

My Bird Quilt

Jon was back in the room at the Inn reading while I took a walk.  There’s a long dirt road heading out of town that goes up and up.  It continues to go up no matter how many times I think I’ve come to the top.

Usually, as soon as we get to the Inn, which we’ve been going to for at least 15 years, I immediately relax.  But this time it was different, I didn’t sleep well and thought a walk would do me good.  So up the hill I went, letting the biting cold work it’s magic, bringing me back to the moment again and again.

When suddenly the flutter of birds across the road right in front of me.

As I turned my head the flash of indigo filled my eyes.  Then another as the second blue bird caught the sun in her feathers.  They sat on separate branches of the same tree, their blue turned  gray in the shadows.

And it is at that moment, when I saw the two blue birds that I felt the tension in my body release and my lips lift into a smile.

Is it their color, that third-eye-indigo, that brings such joy, or that it can only be seen to its fullest at certain angles to the sun.

That was a part of it for sure.  But the Bluebirds flew away when the Blue Jays came and I was just as delighted to see them.

Maybe it’s because they make flying look so easy, like so much fun. The way they swoop and circle and land on the thinnest branch with such confidence. If they doubt, I don’t see it.

To me they are winters flowers. Movement, color and life on the darkest days.

  1. Greetings to a new year
This quilt (and all the various works of art from the past month+) are spectacular and full of a magical spirit❣️
My creative muse is often sparked as you share your practice and works of art. Thank you, from my heart,

    1. I could ask for little more than to spark a muse Carol. Thank you for your good words. I feel a shift in my creatively, I think maybe because I’m giving my time to my muse in a very direct and dedicated way. Also, I hope my art has benefited from the truths I have recently come to know, as difficult as that process may be.
