Inspiration From The Squabbling Starlings

What a hard time these Potholders gave me.  Or maybe it was me, giving them a hard time.  After all it’s my job to create them.

I chose the fabric which I used once before, a year or two ago, because yesterday morning as I sat on the couch in the living room doing a ten minute meditation with Jon, the Starlings were squabbling at the feeder.

They made so much noise that I opened one eye to watch them as they bat their wings and squeaked like a mouse in the wall as they fought over the suet.

We don’t have squirrels at our feeders, they stay in the tree tops and woods, but the image on this fabric came as close as I could get to the activity at out bird feeder that morning.

I worked on the Potholders yesterday but wasn’t satisfied, so today I made them right. Cutting back then adding fabric to make them do what I wanted them to.

Six squirrels and birds and some birds by themselves.  Now the fabric is all used up.

I’ll finish these up next week and put them up for sale in my Etsy Shop then.

  1. Charley Harper art!! I would go to his art shows back in the day when he was alive in Cincinnati. His cardinals are iconic. Today I see his art being sold in many states. He was local in his lifetime but his art has spread beyond Ohio’s borders and it’s always a delight to see. Somehow I never expected to see it here!

    1. Ah Lois, I knew someone would remember his name and let me know. I knew it at the time when I made the first batch of Potholders a couple of years ago, but did forget. Thanks for that. And yes, his art has traveled beyond Ohio!

  2. Maria,
Happy early Birthday! In your honor, I would like to buy (including shipping costs) one of your potholders and for you to choose someone to gift it to.

I also would like to buy one of the potholder of the Cardinals for myself (or maybe gift). My preference is the one with the stripe fabric up and down.

I continue to be deeply grateful for you, your art, writing, and all your creative sparks. They are awe-inspiring to me and definitely brings joy and healing.
    from my heart,
    Carol ❣️

    1. Oh Carol, Thank you so much. That’s really sweet of you. And I’m impressed you remembered my birthday. :) I’ll send you an email and the Cardinal is yours. I will think of who to send the Potholder to….
