The Long Pink Thread

The pink thread on my altar in my studio.

The pink thread followed me all the way from my studio into the house.  It was attached to my sewing machine which I brought in early in the morning to warm by the wood stove since it was such a cold night.

I only saw the thread when I was going back to my studio to work.  It was strung between the kitchen doorway and the back door, lit up by the sun, like a spiders silk.

Curious to see how long it really was, I wound the broken end around three fingers and followed it out the back door all the way to my studio.

But when I tried to wind the tread another time around my fingers, I just got tighter and tighter until I saw that it was wrapped around Fate who had come with me to my studio.

The pink thread went over Fate’s back and around her legs.  She looked up at me helplessly, until  I broke the thread.  Then waited patiently as I untangled her from it.

Now the pink thread was knotted and messy,  but I continued to wind it around my fingers.

When I opened my studio door I saw that it was still attached to the big cone of pink thread that sat in the thread holder on my desk.

I broke it off before any more came off the spool.  Then I put the oval of pink thread my altar.

After a moment  I thought… there’s something to this getting tangled in pink thread this morning.

What came to my mind was Mark Zuckerberg saying that companies need more masculine energy and that a culture that celebrates aggression has it own positive merits.  Timely for this Inauguration Day, with the gathering of  billionaires and their yachts and spaceships.

The new-Old Boys Club.

Somehow that glowing pink thread felt like a message to me.   Like a long and messy reminder to not give up hope.

  1. Maria – very meaningful and timely. I will keep the image of the long pink thread – it will remind me to face every morning with hope. Thank you.

  2. Good morning. This reminded me how much I love untangling yarn…..so soothing, calming and peaceful. I look for tangled in thrift stores along with reg yarn. Or when I redo something I’m left with a tangled mess that brings peace.

  3. The pink thread has a wonderful message. It is some sturdy thread to make it from the studio to the house without breaking even when tangled on Fate. It’s a reminder for me that life has its predictable smooth moments and it’s tangled confusing ones. Through it all like the pink thread we move along and when things get tangled we have to slow down, untangle our thoughts and have hope for the next of life’s moments.

  4. I have a group of 3 of us that meets once a month and discuss how we can make a difference. For Christmas I gave them the magnet We’re not going back. Today I texted the same to them. We came out of a strong evangelical church.
We never imagined ourselves where we are today. We believed so many lies.

    1. Laurie, that’s a wonderful thing to be doing. What a good idea and sharing it with people who come from the same place and feel the same I would think is very powerful.
