“I’m here for you,” I said to the unfinished quilt laying on my studio floor. You have 100 percent of my attention, tell me what you want.
I didn’t rush it, but looked at the quilt patiently from different angles.
I stood right over it, then backed up to the furthest corner of my studio. I looked at it from the corner of my eye and stood on the stool looking down on it from above.
Gray it said, something not too light and not too dark. Preferably a plaid.
Then I started my search. I knew I didn’t have exactly what I had in mind in my shelves. But I looked anyway. Because sometime what I have in mind isn’t the only option.
Now that I had an idea of what I was looking for I could experiment with varying options. I pulled fabric from my shelves and laid them on my floor at the bottom and sides of the quilt.
When nothing worked, I thought about the two boxes of fabric I still had in the house. I’d looked through them just yesterday and found nothing that I could use. But today was a new day and so I tried again.
I found the fabric I was looking for in a pile of cloth napkins. Eight warm gray plaid napkins. They were just right.
I cut seven in half for the sides and bottom and one in thirds for the top. I finished making a few more red scrap patchwork pieces that I began yesterday and added just a bit of blue plaid to make it go around the whole quilt.
What came next was easy, I knew it had to have a dark blue border.
There wasn’t enough of Hannah’s dark blue pants that I’d used in the quilt already. So I went to my shelf of denim and there was about a yard of dark blue denim.
When I finished the top of Winter Shadows, I decided on a rusty red small plaid for the back. Yardage that Lorry just sent me from her mother’s stash.
I’m not sure if I’ll work on the back of Winter Shadows tomorrow. I have an idea for a Holding Pillow that has been nagging at me. I’ll see how I feel in the morning.
