RIP White Hen

White Hen

White Hen wasn’t in the Chicken Coop when I went to close it up.

I always look and make sure all three hens are in the coop before closing the door for the night.  When I saw there were only two hens, I got a flash light and looking for the third.

But I couldn’t find her anywhere and she didn’t show up the next morning.

I’m guessing she went off to die as animals often do.  White Hen was 11 years old.  That’s the oldest chicken I’ve ever had.  I read that hens in captivity usually live between 5 and 10 years.

And I wouldn’t call White Hen living in captivity, like all our chickens she had free range of the farm.  She was smart enough not to get picked off by an owl or hawk and to stay out of the road.    We got her as a chick in 2014 with Brown Hen who died three years ago.

I’ll miss seeing White Hen with Kitty and Anne, wandering the farm, but she had a good long life,   especially for a chicken.

  1. So sorry Maria!
Wonderful White Hen, bless her soul – she ruled the roost in her confident way.
I will miss seeing her as part of the trio.
She may have passed into spirit – but she will always be a part of Bedlam farm for me.
You took good loving and patient care of her.
    with sympathy,
    Peg

  2. I’m so sorry Maria. I know we can’t expect them to live forever but it is still sad when we lose them. God Speed, White Hen. You were a good chicken.
