When I made my first Holding Pillow Jon told me he would like to have one. That’s not unusual though, Jon often says he’d like to have something that I made.
But this time he asked more than once.
I kept putting it off. I’ll make one for you over the weekend, I told him last week. When it didn’t happen I told him I’d make him on this past weekend.
But then then we went to lunch with a friend on Saturday and I spend a good chunk of the afternoon making a couple of pots of soup and doing laundry. On Sunday we got all that snow and I knew I’d be busy shoveling and trying to squeeze in a snowshoe through the woods.
But then, I thought of the heart.
I’d been wondering what to put on Jon’s pillow, and when I thought of a heart, it was so obvious, I took it as a sign. So I turned on the heat in my studio before taking that short snowshoe with the dogs (short because I was already tired from shoveling and the snow was deep even for Fate and Zinnia).
When I got back my studio was toasty and I had already decided I’d begin the pillow using a piece of fabric from Jon’s own jeans. (I have a nice collection of them on my shelf).
Of course it would have to be blue, Jon’s favorite color.
When I was done I put the Heart Holding Pillow on his chair in the living room. When Jon was finished with his work for the evening, he came in and saw it.
Jon’s face lit up, his eyes sparkled and his smile was sweetly innocent. He immediately picked it up and hugged it. He looked like a kid with his favorite stuffed animal.
I’m surprised as how many people are interested in my Holding Pillows.
Some who are going though difficult personal times with a loved one, some healing from an illness or surgery, some want them for their adult children, and others, like Jon, find them comforting in an everyday way.
I’ll be making more Holding Pillows. I have the Purple Crow Pillow to finish (it is sold) and another pillow to make this week. I seem to always have another idea and I love that they are doing just what I hoped they would. Bring a bit of peace and comfort to the people who are holding them.

I love the look in Jon’s eyes. Everyone needs a hug. Thank you Maria.
I know Maggie….
