Looking Through The Birch Bark Mask

I found the Birch Bark mask a few weeks ago in the woods behind the farm.  Still attached to the dead birch the curling bark made a mask just the right size for me to look through.

(as if she knew)

And as I looked, I felt as if I were seeing as a tree might

A tree who can not turn her head,
like a horse with blinders,
only seeing what is directly in front of her.

But what I found in the minutes I wore the mask was that what was in front of me was exactly the same and constantly changing.

Time slowed so a rogue snowflake, drifting in the sunlight, was an event.

The subtle shift of light and color
The lack of expectation
The peace of being still
The idea of the world coming to me,
instead of me going to it

The sense of what I could see
being enough.

  1. What an incredible photo. The glimpse of your hat was the first thing I noticed, then the surprise of seeing your eyes where eyes aren’t expected.
Tangential thought – I’m reading a fantasy book where a person tries to sneak behind a talking tree to snip off a twig and the tree’s face is instantly on what had been its back. So in that story the tree has a 360 view of things.

    1. Ah, of course it would Trish. That makes more sense trees don’t have front and back like humans do. Actually that idea is closer to the way a sheep sees.
