The Cold

Merricat well camouflaged in the frozen marsh

Two scoops of grain for the sheep and one for the donkeys.  When Issachar tries to get some of Fanny’s grain, head down, she makes a sound like an elephant and chases him away.

The thermometer out the kitchen window reads 20degrees.  But I only believe it for the those moments when the sun shows up, making the snow glow and turning the world yellow.

Just as quickly it’s gone and a sharp wind sucks the breath right out of me.

My body tenses, all my muscle tightening, and I forget to breath.  It’s like I’m in survival mode and when I realize that I’m stooped and my neck is aching, I shake my body like an animal shaking off its worries. I stretch my spine and drop my shoulders, like I learned to do in Bellydancing class.

Then I push out my bellying in a deep breath.

I’m so cold I don’t even want to go for a walk.  And I have a feeling the dogs feel the same.  The snow is topped with a thick layer of ice we all have to break though with each step.  Easier for me than for them.

So I finish filling up the water bowls and bird feeders. I give Kitty and Anne some turning humus, which they gobble up.  I chat with White Hen and spend some time in the barn with Zip, scratching him under the chin, as he perches on a hay bale.

Zinnia takes a snow bath, rolling on her back and groaning in ecstasy.  But Fate comes the first time I call her.

She’s at the back door waiting to go in, even before I get there.

  1. Marie. VERY WELL SAID. For the first time in my life it is too cold to walk. Even our 90 pound lab. Will not go on the ice covered snow

    1. I’m so glad to say the sun came out today it feels so warm even though it’s only 4 degrees higher in the thermometer. I hope you got the sun too Nanc.

  2. What a beautiful and compelling monochromatic study. I see it in a gallery or on my walls! And the “where’s Waldo?” adds a note of whimsy.
