Now There’s Mud Too

Now there is mud.  So much mud, manure, water, ice and snow.

For the first time ever, the edges of the pole barn are mucky puddles.  The ground is still frozen under the thick layer of mud, so the water sits with no place to go.

Even after they roll in the snow, and I dry them off, Zinnia and Fate bring the smell of manure into the house.

With the warm weather, the sheep and donkeys are less irritable but just as hungry.  The snow and ice is still deep in the pasture.  It will be some time before the winter grass is revealed.

With a little nudge from me, Kitty and Anne decided to come out of the coop this morning.

Once on the ground, they looked around them as if they’d landed on another planet.  But when I tossed some meal worms under the bird feeder it all came back to them.

They spent the day pecking at the shells the birds dropped looking for the ones that still had seeds in them.

White Hen and I had our good morning chat.  I put another hay bale in her stall so she has more space to move around and from the dropping she seems to be using it.

As someone said to me the other day, she’s a tough old bird.
