The Grain Scoop

The wooden handle worn shiny and smooth by so many hands.
And now mine too.

The elegant twist of metal, orange with age. I can imagine folding with my fingers, and ironing with my iron, the thin seam of metal along the long upright edge.

The grain scoop was here when we moved onto the farm.

The price is still written on the bottom, 60 cents, in faded black grease pencil.

Two scoops of grain for the sheep and donkeys on the coldest days of winter.
One scoop of sunflower seeds to fill the bird feeder at the living room window and one and a half, for the feeder hanging from my studio.

I have no doubt it will last longer (it already has) than the plastic scoops we bought when we moved to the farm.

I already know it ages more beautifully.

Not paling like plastic,
but fading softly,
revealing the patina of its true self

  1. Ahhhh yes…☺️
Amazing how inanimate objects come alive with their stories. Thanks once again for sharing❣️

  2. I love old utilitarian tools like that. There is a beauty to them you can’t buy. I collect them when I can, they do have to earn their keep but I get much enjoyment out of each piece. I’ll collect new pieces too but they have to be well made.

    1. It’s wonderful to use them KJ, I have a sifter like that with a little wooden bob on the handle. The new ones I’ve had fall apart so easily, but not this one.
