Notes From The Woods, Just Before Spring

It was warm enough for this snake and snow fleas to be out.

White mushrooms, gray mushroom brown mushrooms
all growing off the bark of standing trees.

Fresh pecked woodpecker holes
creamy yellow in the skeleton woods.

Young beech trees still hold onto last years leaves
they catch the sunlight
translucent and quivering
and I’m walking through a crystal cavern.

The arm and tail of a chipmunk, black with death.

I walk up the fallen oak from the stump to the crown,
now withered brown leaves touching the ground.

Red buds on the maples turn the sky purple.

One of my favorite trees to visit in my neighbors woods.  Twins split down the middle and reaching up like antlers.

    1. Now I will see the same when I visit the tree Laurie. I do love that, maybe I’ll dance with them. And you’re so right about spring, maybe because it seems to come and go before it stays. In the winter I can hardly remember what it feels like.
