It’s unusual for Lulu to share her hay with a sheep. Fanny is more diplomatic, but Lulu goes to the hay feeder she wants to eat from and chases everyone but Fanny away.
But every once in a while Merricat or Constance will approach the donkey’s hay feeder and start eating as if they’ve never experienced the wrath of Lulu.
Today it was Merricat. Not only was she sharing Lulu hay but she was right in Lulu’s face.
The donkeys loves to nibble on the stuff that falls to the bottom of the feeder. It’s like eating the icing before the cake. They often push the hay onto the ground to get to it. Which is what Lulu is doing in the photo above.
So maybe she was fine with Merricat eating the hay as long as she left the good stuff alone.
About a week ago I started putting some hay in the raised hay feeder. Asher and Issachar like to eat from it and it makes more space at the lower feeder for the rest of the sheep.
Now when I look at all the hay falling onto their wool, I dread the though of skirting their shorn fleeces. I won’t shear them until they are off hay and grazing again. That should help to keep their wool cleaner.
