The Peace of Wild Things
by Wendell Berry
When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Oh my gosh Maria…this is my favorite poem! We are sisters from different mothers!
It’s a new one to me Maggie. A friend just sent it to me and I felt it would be perfect to share on my blog. There is definitely a connection between people who relate to it!
Beautiful!
Oh Maria this is just so helpful for me right now and “just what the doctor ordered”! I will look up Wendell Berry. Also the calming photo of your Canadian geese on the pond. You both have such a place to always go to for respite moments. Thanks so much!
I feel very fortunate to have so much nature out my door Joan.
God knows I needed this today.
Only nature can give me a sense of sanity and rest right now. Thanks
I know how you feel LoisJean.
I couldn’t sleep last night and I read this poem that you posted. I don’t usually care for poetry, unfortunately, but this really touched me. Thanks
That speaks highly of the poem I think Sandy, it spoke to you when others didn’t. :)
I think you’re right.
