White Hen’s Expanded Living Space

Yesterday I expanded White Hens stall by two old hay bales from the hayloft.

Not that she couldn’t roam the stall without the hay bales, but she doesn’t.

When I first put her in the barn I expected her to spend her time on the floor.  But she hopped up on the two hay bales that I used to prop up the makeshift gate and never left.

Maybe she felt safer being up high.  Whatever it is, now White Hen has more space to move around.

I keep expecting one day to come in the barn and see her on the other side of the gate she roosts on.  Or maybe even in the pole barn, which she can easily get to if she chose.

But it seems, for now, she’s content with her stall filled with hay bales.

And it’s not as if she’s all alone, she has some regular visitors.

More than a few times I’ve walked in on a sparrow roosting on the wire over White Hen’s stall.  No doubt eating her food and drinking her water.  And Zip is spending more time in stall next to White Hen since he discovered the bucket filled with straw.

  1. Oh my goodness. That photo of Zip is adorable.

Isn’t it fun to see how often what animals prefer is so utterly different from what we would expect?
